According to Dr. Adam Earnheardt, “when students buy books for a class, they usually do so at the beginning of the semester, sometimes within the first week or two – and then they crack them open mid-semester, right around the time a mid-term exam is coming. Well, that might be true for some – but not for our next recipient. This student contacted me well in advance of the spring semester to ask which book I would be using in my computer-mediated communication class. I thought, no biggie, he wants to get a jump on this while he has some extra holiday cash. Little did I know he would read the entire book before the semester began. Oh yeah – AND HERE IS THE BOOK!” In the words of Dr. Rebecca Curnalia, “this student is simply a great student. He is diligent, prepared, enthusiastic, and interacts well with all of his classmates.” As stated by Dr. Jeff Tyus, “he is a very well-prepared student and, as a nontraditional student, does a good job of playing the role of “mentor” to his younger, more traditional peers. I appreciate the fact that Thad loves Communication and spends hours in the library ensuring his success in his classes.” According to Dorian Mermer, “he is one of those rare students who goes above and beyond in all of his classes. He is truly enthusiastic about learning.” That’s probably why one of this students favorite quotes comes from Albert Einstein who said: “The mind that opens to a new idea never comes back to its original size.” Dr. Cary Horvath said QUOTE - I've met some wonderful students in my time, many of whom are in this room, but HE is hands-down, the BEST student I have ever encountered. I'm going to say that again - he is the best student I've had in my 20 years of teaching. Wow! He is over-the-top conscientious, respectful, and hard-working. He goes above and beyond with every assignment, doing more than what is asked, doing work early, and sharing his work with others. He offers to do more, read more, take on extra projects - it's pretty amazing. His work is typically perfect. Oh yeah - and he's a really nice guy, too. END QUOTE That really nice guy is the recipient of the Department of Communication - Lawrence Hugenberg Memorial Award - for Outstanding Student of the Year. - Daniel Thaddeus “Thad” Smith |
